Licence extract — what it is and how to get one

The licence stays with the company, the extract travels with the car

A passenger transport licence is granted to a business by the mayor or the district head where the company is registered. The licence itself stays in the company's files. Every vehicle working under it gets its own licence extract: that is the document that belongs in the car and the one you show during a roadside check. One car, one extract.

What driving without an extract costs

The Road Transport Act of 6 September 2001 requires a driver to carry the licence or an extract from it and to present it on demand. A check by the Road Transport Inspectorate or the police ends in a penalty, and carrying passengers without a licence is not a traffic ticket but an administrative fine. Both the driver and the company they drive for are exposed.

Two ways to get an extract

• Your own licence: you register a business, apply to the authority, wait for the decision and pay for the licence and for each extract. This makes sense if you plan your own fleet.
• Working under a partner's licence: the extract is issued by a company that already holds the licence. You start right away, with no business registration and no filings of your own.

What you need to prepare

• A Polish driving licence — since 17 June 2024 an app driver must hold a licence issued in Poland or in another EU or EEA country.
• A criminal record certificate — you collect it at the court, the court fee is 30 zł. You pay for it yourself and bring the document.
• Medical and psychological examinations — you take them at a medical facility; the cost depends on the facility.
• Identity verification in person — the law requires the intermediary to verify the driver in person, so you come to the office once.

No Polish driving licence?

You exchange yours. Anyone with 185 days of legal residence in Poland is entitled to the exchange. A licence issued outside the EU requires passing the theory part of the state exam — you do not retake the practical part. We will walk you through it: this is the route most of our drivers take.
