Licence and extract — the foundation

The Road Transport Act of 6 September 2001 requires a driver to carry the licence or an extract from it and to present it on demand. The licence belongs to the company; the extract travels with a specific car. Everything else follows from this: without it the other rules hardly matter, because the ride is illegal anyway.

From 1 October 2023: the intermediary must verify you

The company giving you rides must confirm your identity in person — the candidate comes to the office, the company photographs their face and checks their driving entitlement and criminal record. By that date drivers who had started earlier had to be verified too. That is why a single visit to the office cannot be skipped with any honest partner, and why we ask for one as well.

From 17 June 2024: a Polish driving licence

A driver carrying passengers must hold a licence issued in Poland or in another EU or EEA country. A licence from outside that circle has to be exchanged. Anyone with 185 days of legal residence in Poland is entitled to the exchange; for a licence from outside the EU the theory part of the state exam is added — you do not retake the practical part.

While you work: checking that it is you driving

The intermediary must verify at random that the ride is performed by the person it was assigned to — at least once every 50 rides and at least once a week. The verification data is kept for five years from the end of the year in which the relationship ended. In practice this is the selfie the app asks for: not a whim of Uber's or Bolt's, but the rule being carried out.

The driver ID

In its judgment of 17 February 2026 (II GSK 1826/22) the Supreme Administrative Court held that an electronic ID inside the app does not replace the physical one where a municipal council resolution requires it — and that this applies to app-based rides as well, not only to taxis. A missing ID can be treated as a gross breach of the licence conditions. The requirements are local, so ask your manager what applies in the city you drive in.

The fines

• Carrying passengers without the required licence — 500 000 zł.
• Failing to produce the device with the app during a check — 12 000 zł.
• For an intermediary company the fines reach 1 000 000 zł.

The extract, the verification, the settlements and the contact with the apps are on us.
